The INTERCEPT Blood System for red blood cells was designed with the following blood safety and availability goals in mind:

Reduce the transmission risk for a large spectrum of red blood cell (RBC) pathogens, including agents for which testing does not exist
Improve blood availability by reducing donor deferrals
Replace gamma irradiation for the prevention of transfusion-associated graft versus host disease (TA-GVHD)
Reduce potential transfusion reactions with decreased residual plasma
Complete pathogen inactivation safety strategies for all three blood components
Compatible with all RBC collection platforms and standard blood processing equipment
Process flexibility to enable use of any RBC storage solution
Minimise haemoglobin loss
No external illumination source or compound removal device
Meets the Council of Europe guidelines for leukoreduced RBCs in additive solution
